Description
Every Fender Stratocaster collector and enthusiast knows that some vintages are truly rare and special. One of the most coveted among Fender big-head lovers, and one of the rarest overall, is undoubtedly the 1967 model. Following Fender’s acquisition by CBS, there was a very productive period in 1966, but production subsequently slowed significantly. Stratocaster sales were relatively sluggish, and production shifted to other models, creating what many consider a true production vacuum between 1967 and 1969. If it weren’t for Jimi Hendrix, who helped bring the Stratocaster back into the spotlight, this model likely wouldn’t have regained popularity so quickly.
Beyond its rarity, this guitar boasts extremely interesting features: the neck is dated 1967, it features 1966 potentiometers, and it retains the original electronics and 3-way selector switch. One of its most notable features is the famous and sought-after black-bottom pickups.
It’s also fascinating that it’s a Custom Color. Finding a 1967 Stratocaster is already challenging, but this one is finished in Candy Apple Red. Making it even more unique is the exceptional fading that has developed over the years. The fading is particularly pronounced on the front of the instrument, while the original color is still clearly visible under the pickguard and when looking at the back of the instrument. On the side of the body, the transition from the classic Candy Apple Red to this softer shade is clearly visible, creating a truly extraordinary visual effect.
The headstock features the Transition logo, Fender “F” tuners, and the original paint. The tuners had been replaced over the years, but were later restored to the originals. The nut was also replaced, while the bridge is original with a steel block. The decal is original.
In terms of sound and playability, this Stratocaster is simply extraordinary. It offers a highly dynamic tone, in perfect Hendrix style, yet always refined and richly nuanced. Not only in its color, but also in its response, this instrument expresses a unique personality.
The case is a type that was standard in Northern Europe during those years. We purchased this guitar from a Swedish collector and musician, and it represents an excellent opportunity to enrich one’s collection with a Custom Color instrument that offers excellent playability and an incredible look. It retains all the charm and aroma of authentic vintage.
